Belarus National Library donates 800 books to Iraqi libraries

MINSK, 11 July (BelTA) – The National Library of Belarus handed over a collection of books to the Embassy of Iraq. The donation ceremony was held as part of an international project to collect books for Iraqi libraries, BelTA learned from the National Library.

The collection included books on humanities, textbooks, books with articles presented at scientific conferences, collections of research papers, reference books, industrial catalogs, publications, thesis abstracts, and other materials. Many of the books were published in Belarus and tell about the country’s culture, economy, environment, politics, and cooperation with other countries. A key selection criterion was the presence of an abstract or fragments in English.

A representative of the Embassy of Iraq in Belarus said that terrorists have ruined many libraries and burned a big number of books, and now the country has to restore its knowledge and holdings. The largest libraries of the world can provide considerable assistance with this effort.

Tatiana Kuzminich, deputy director for information resources at the National Library of Belarus, addressed the Iraqi side with words of support. She said that nothing can justify the barbaric actions to destroy library holdings. Libraries are treasuries of the world’s knowledge, and it is a sacred duty to join efforts in restoring the holdings and strengthening their role in the cultural life of the country.

The Iraqi side expressed gratitude for the support and assistance and wished Belarus peace and accord.
