Athletes from 22 countries to compete at Minsk sambo tournament

MINSK, 17 February (BelTA) – The 24th International Category A Sambo Tournament for the Prizes of the President of Belarus will take place at the Minsk Sports Center on 20-21 February. Competing for medals will be athletes from 22 countries, head coach of the Belarusian national sambo team Dmitry Bazylev told a press conference on 17 February, BelTA has learned.

“The competitions will be a qualifying event where the coaching staff will be able to assess the readiness of the athletes. Athletes are set ambitious tasks. Fans expect great performance and victories. We need victories at the forthcoming tournament. Taking part in the competitions will be representatives of 22 countries. Minsk will host sambo wrestlers from Angola for the first time. Belarus will field some 60 athletes at the forthcoming event,” Dmitry Bazylev said.

The head coach is confident that Belarusian wrestlers will have a strong performance, which will be a good start to the season.

According to Belarus’ Deputy Sport and Tourism Minister Aleksandr Baraulya, the international tournament featured many famous athletes in different years. “We take pride in the successes of Belarusian wrestlers. Every time they demonstrate their ability to compete against the world’s and European leading athletes at the highest level. Sambo is very popular in our country,” he added.

The Belarus President’s Sports Club has instituted special prizes for the tournament.

The competitions are organized by the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), the Sport and Tourism Ministry, the President's Sports Club, the Minsk City Hall, the National Olympic Committee, and the Belarusian Sambo Federation.

The entry is free.

In 2019, Belarusian wrestlers won 23 (seven gold, eight silver, and eight bronze) medals at the international Category A tournament in Minsk.
