2019 Minsk Half Marathon medals, mascot unveiled

MINSK, 15 August (BelTA) – One month before the Minsk Half Marathon takes place on 15 September, the event's organizers unveiled the medals and the mascot of the sport event at the National Press Center on 15 August, BelTA has learned.

“We always take the medal development very seriously. That why medals of our half marathon have an absolutely different design every year,” said Chairman of the Belarusian Athletics Federation Vadim Devyatovsky.

Special slogan T-shirts have also been produced for the forthcoming half marathon.

The mascot of the Minsk Half Marathon 2019 has been unveiled as well. “Lesik the Fox gained much popularity during the 2nd European Games. The federation decided to design a mascot for the half marathon, too. It is a hare. We are going to announce a competition to name it. Applications can be submitted to the Belarusian Athletics Federation,” Vadim Devyatovsky said.

First Deputy Sport and Tourism Minister Vyacheslav Durnov said that the preparations for the one of the country’s major sports events are in full swing throughout the year. “The Minsk Half Marathon has already become an international project. A lot of organizational work has been done. The event will be held for its fifth time. I am confident that the gained experience will secure a high-level organization of the half marathon,” he said. 

Vyacheslav Durnov stressed that Belarus plays host to a wide range of sports events which attract crowds of healthy lifestyle enthusiasts, including from abroad thanks to the country's recent visa facilitation policy.

The forthcoming marathon will be supported by the UNICEF Office in Belarus and the Belarusian Society of the Red Cross. For instance, UNICEF Deputy Representative in Belarus Gabrielle Akimova will join the marathon together with her sons.

The organizers ask all the registered participants to arrive at the venue in advance. 

The program will include the 5km, 10km, and 21.1km, and children’s races. There will be water points on the Minsk Half Marathon route.

Minsk Half Marathon is one of the largest sports events of Belarus. Taking part in the 2018 edition were over 35,000 people.

In 2019, the event will be held for its fifth time. The Minsk Half Marathon has been assigned the IAAF Silver Label. The prize pot of the competitions makes up $60,000.

According to the organizers’ estimates, the Minsk Half Marathon 2019 will draw some 40,000 participants. Registration for the 5km, 10km and 21,1km races is open on the Minsk Half Marathon website through 13 September. Representatives of 57 countries have already registered for the event.
