Brest gearing up to mark its 1,000th birthday

A photo album dedicated to the upcoming celebrations of Brest anniversary resembles a stroll from a unique ancient settlement of Berestye with the survived structures of the 13th century and the legendary hero fortress on the border to a modern CIS Capital of Culture 2019 with its monumental railway station, a well-known lamplighter and the local “Arbat” – Sovetskaya pedestrian street.

The life here goes as usual: Brest residents enjoy the last summer days walking along the river bank, sitting near fountains and having picnics on lawns. At the same time the whole city is enveloped in a special atmosphere ahead of the celebrations of its 1,000th anniversary. Locals and tourists write anniversary greetings to Brest on a so-called "birthday card" – a banner, several meters long, installed in the center of the city.
