Viktoria Kolb brings first gold to Belarus at European Athletics U23 Championships

MINSK, 10 July (BelTA) – Estonia’s Tallinn is hosting the European Athletics U23 Championships. On the first competition day Belarusian Viktoria Kolb claimed gold in shot putting, BelTA informs.

The Belarusian made a confident stroll through the qualifying round with her best attempt of 16.43m. This result brought her third place among hopefuls for the final. In the decisive round of six attempts the Belarusian held second position among twelve best athletes with the result of 17.02m until the final attempt. Her final throw of 17.47m won her gold of the championships. Viktoria Kolb’s closest rival, Shanice Craft of Germany, finished second with the throw of 17.29m. Bronze went to fellow German Sara Gambetta (16.99m).

Elsewhere, Belarusian hammer thrower Yuri Vasilchenko has qualified for the final with the result of 67.93m. Long jumper Alexei Chigorevsky of Belarus reached the final with his best attempt of 7.40m.

Irina Yakoltsevich reached the pole vaulting final with her attempt of 4.15m. A throw of 55.27m brought discus thrower Valery Golubkovich to the final as well. Javelin thrower Tatiana Korzh (52.31m in the qualifying round), 3000m hurdles runner Anastasia Puzakova (9:58.29) will compete in the final events on 11 July. The European Athletics U23 Championships will finish on 12 July.
