Sergei Martynov wins Olympic gold medal

MINSK, 3 August (BelTA) - Shooter Sergei Martynov won the gold medal, first one for Belarus, in the Men's 50m Rifle Prone final at the Olympic Games on 3 August. This is the third medal won by the Belarus team at the 2012 London Olympics, BelTA has learnt.

The 44-year-old shooter completely outclassed his opponents both in qualification and in the final on 3 August. In the Men's 50m Rifle Prone qualification he took first place and equaled the world record of 600 points. In the final he again was much stronger than his opponents and scored 705.5 points, which is final world record.

Belgian Lionel Cox came in second with 701.2 points and Slovenian Rajmond Debevec third with only 0.2 points behind.

This is the third Olympic medal won by the experienced Belarusian shooter. Previously he won bronze medals in Sydney (2000) and in Athens (2004). He took part in six Olympiads and reached finals four times. Apart from his Olympic achievements, Sergei Martynov became the World Champion in 2006 and 2010 and snatched the gold medal at the European Championship in 1997.
