Mirnyi/Tecau claim first ATP team title in Bucharest

MINSK, 29 April (BelTA) – Belarus Max Mirnyi and Horia Tecau of Romania won the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest on Saturday, 27 April. It is their first joint success in the ATP tournaments, BelTA has learnt.

The top-seeded Belarusian-Romanian duet defeated Lukas Dlouhy of Austria and Oliver Marach of the Czech Republic 4-6 6-4, 10-6 in the final. The match lasted for one hour and 30 minutes.

On their way to the triumph, Max Mirnyi and Horia Tecau needed 68 minutes to overpower the Italian tandem Daniele Bracciali and Potito Starace 6-4, 6-4 in the opener, defeated an international pair of Victor Hanescu of Romania and Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal Max Mirnyi and Horia Tecau took a 3-6, 10-8 victory over Andreas Seppi of Italy and Viktor Troicki of Serbia.

The current season is the first one when Max Mirnyi and Horia Tecau have teamed up for the doubles. They have already made it to the finals of two doubles tournaments. In January they were one step from the first place in Sydney repeating their success later in March at the 2013 Delray Beach International Tennis Championships. Horia Tecau received an injury after that, and Max Mirnyi had to team up with Russia’s Mikhail Yuzhny for Sony Open in Miami, where the Belarusian-Russian pair yielded in the second round. Last week Max Mirnyi reunited with Horia Tecau for the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters doubles tournament. They got a solid 6-2, 6-2 victory over an international duo Ivan Dodig (Croatia)/ Radek Stepanek (Czechia) 4-6, 2-6 just to fell 4-6, 4-6 to the Spaniards David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco in the quarterfinal.

Max Mirnyi, 35, has won the Monte Carlo event twice. In 2003 he celebrated the success with India’s Mahesh Bhupathi, while in 2006 it was Sweden’s Jonas Bjorkman who partnered Max Mirnyi to win the tournament. During his long professional career Max Mirnyi won 45 ATP doubles tournaments teaming up with different tennis players. Horia Tecau, 28, has 13 ATP trophies. In the ATP world doubles rankings Max Mirnyi and Horia Tecau are 13th, with the American brothers Bob and Mike Bryan topping the list.

The clay court competitions in the Romanian capital complete on Sunday, 28 April.
