IEC General Meeting kicks off in Minsk

MINSK, 5 October (BelTA) – The General Meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) kicked off in Minsk with meetings of technical committees and subcommittees on 5 October, BelTA learnt from the press service of the State Committee for Standardization.

“The General Meeting will feature sessions of about 30 IEC technical committees and subcommittees on standardization. They are involved in the development of IEC international standards in such areas as electronic engineering for power delivery, equipment for atmosphere explosibles, electric equipment and systems for railways, semiconductor devices, domestic electric appliances, audio, video and multimedia systems,” the committee said.

Technical committees and subcommittees will be attended by more than 900 experts from over 80 countries, including more than 120 from Belarus. Belarusian specialists represent organizations subordinate to the ministries of industry, energy, healthcare, and emergencies, the State Committee for Standardization, Belneftekhim Concern, the National Academy of Sciences. “For the majority of Belarusian specialists this will be an invaluable experience, the source of modern knowledge and new business contacts, which will allow them to hone up their professional skills,” the committee stressed.

The sessions of the IEC technical committees and subcommittees will be held in Minsk on 5-16 October. The official opening ceremony of the 79th IEC General Meeting will take place on 12 October.

Founded in 1906, the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is the world’s leading organization for the preparation and publication of International Standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies. Among its member states are 166 countries.

Belarus has been the IEC full member since 1993. Today a total of 224 technical experts of 54 Belarusian organizations take part in the work of 92 IEC technical committees and subcommittees.

The 79th General Meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission will be running in Minsk from 5 to 16 October and will be a big event not only for the economic and scientific-technical life of Belarus but also for the entire international community. This is the so-called technical Olympics which brings together representatives of the world's largest manufacturing companies: from mid-level engineers and managers to senior management, and top-ranking officials of ministries and departments. The General Meetings are held in advanced high-tech industrial countries and in promising regions.
