Domrachava, Novikov win first medals for Belarus at Vancouver 2010 Olympics

MINSK, 19 February (BelTA) – Belarusian biathletes Darya Domrachava and Sergey Novikov have won first medals for Belarus’ Olympic team at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.

On 18 February Darya Domrachava won bronze in Women’s 15km Individual race. The Belarusian came third with just one miss at 28.2 seconds behind the winner Tora Berger of Norway. Kazakhstan’s Elena Khrustaleva claimed silver.

Other Belarusians ranked as follows: Lyudmila Kalinchik was 9th (42 minutes, 39.1 seconds, one miss), Olga Kudryashova was 16th (43 minutes and 11 seconds), and Nadezhda Skardino was 28th with 44 minutes 09.4 seconds.

Another Belarusian biathlete Sergey Novikov made a sensation by winning silver in Men’s 20km Individual race on 18 February.

The Belarusian came second after Norway's Emil Hegle Svendsen. Novikov made no miss on the shooting range and shared silver with other Norwegian Ole Einar Bjoerndalen after finishing 9.5sec behind Svendsen.

Other Belarusians ranked as follows: Alexandr Syman was 41st with three misses, Rustam Valiullin was 48th (four misses), and Evgeny Abramenko was 58th with two misses.
