MINSK, 25 April (BelTA) – Belarus and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have done a lot to restore Chernobyl-affected regions, UN Under-Secretary-General, Administrator of the UN Development Program Helen Clark told reporters during the international high-level conference, titled as Thirty Years After Chernobyl. From Emergency to Revival and Sustainable Socio-Economic Development of Affected Territories, in Minsk on 25 April, BelTA has learned.
“As for the Chernobyl agenda, first of all, we are paying attention to supporting people, ensuring high living standards, and providing jobs in the regions. Besides, it is important to provide comprehensive information about the state of the environment, foodstuffs, health of the population,” Helen Clark said. “We have done a lot. People start to return to the regions which were affected by the nuclear accident. Today they understand the situation they are in very well.”
The UN representative noted that the cooperation with Belarus aimed at improving the social and economic environment will be continued. “We are convinced that it will be efficient in the future,” she added.
According to Helen Clark, within a decade the UNDP has evolved from a small humanitarian concept into a large-scale program of assistance and rehabilitation of Chernobyl-affected regions. “However, this work would be impossible without effective and active assistance and without the leadership of Belarusian high-ranking officials,” the UN Under-Secretary-General said.
