BURABAY, 16 October (BelTA) – The CIS member states push for strengthening the central role of the United Nations Organization in securing peace, runs the joint statement of the CIS heads of state adopted at the CIS Heads of State Council meeting on 16 October to mark the 70^th anniversary of the UN foundation, BelTA informs.

The joint statement stresses that the CIS member states are in favor of strengthening the UN central role in ensuring peace, security and sustainable development, maintaining the UN Security Council responsibility in peacekeeping and security matters envisaged in the UN Charter. The CIS heads of state also take note of the need to reform and improve the UN structure.

According to the statement, the UN Security Council should be more representative and efficient in order to meet the requirements of the present-day world, while the organization’s activity should be aimed at promoting the adoption of decisions that demonstrate general commitment to the goals and principles of the UN Charter.

The statement underlines the UN considerable contribution to the development of independent states, settlement of international and interstate conflicts as well as its leading role in supporting international peace and security.

The document stresses that the current globalization processes worldwide, new challenges and threats, first of all religious extremism, terrorism, transnational organized crime, drug trafficking as well as racism, xenophobia and related intolerance requires UN adjustment to new realities.

The attention of the UN member states is drawn to the fact that the adequate fulfillment of functions by the organization as the center for coordinating international collective efforts requires political will, mobilization of necessary resources and support, joint efforts for achieving consensus, taking into account the interests of every state participating in the talks.
