MINSK, 3 December (BelTA) – The Belarusian national team of Pavel Sankovich, Ilya Shimanovich, Svetlana Khokhlova and Alexandra Gerasimenya claimed the 4x50m medley relay bronze on the second day of the 2015 European Short Course Swimming Championships in Netanya, Israel, BelTA informs.
Leading during the final event were the teams of Italy, Russia and Germany. However, on the final fourth leg Alexandra Gerasimenya outpaced not only the German swimmer but also denied one of the world’s recognized sprinters Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands of the opportunity to bag a medal. The Belarusian team clocked 1:39.03 to take bronze. Second went Russia with the time of 1:38.36. Gold was collected by Italy (1:38.33).
Yevgeny Tsurkin and Pavel Sankovich, both considered among favorites, narrowly missed out on medals in the men’s 100m butterfly final. Pavel Sankovich touched in fourth (50.31), while Yevgeny Tsurkin was sixth (50.50). Ilya Shimanovich went eighth in the men’s 200m breaststroke with the time of 2:07.44.
Thursday’s action added second medal to Belarus’ tally at the championships in Israel. On 2 December Belarus claimed the men’s 4x50m freestyle relay bronze.
