Belarus to advance UN resolution on fighting slave trade

MINSK, 15 May (BelTA) – The 24th session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice will take place in Vienna on 18-22 May. The Commission is a working body of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.

A Belarusian delegation led by Valery Voronetsky, Belarus’ resident representative in international organizations in Vienna, will take part in the session. Advancing the Belarusian resolution on implementing the United Nations Global Plan of Action Against Trafficking in Persons is one of the key tasks of the delegation. The resolution was adopted by the UN General Assembly upon Belarus’ initiative in 2010. The Belarusian resolution is supposed to attract the attention of the global community to the results that have been secured and the measures that need to be taken to fulfill the global plan, explained the source.

The session will also focus on discussing results of the 13th UN congress on crime prevention and criminal justice and preparing recommendations regarding consequent actions in the area of crime prevention so that the 70th session of the UN General Assembly could adopt the document. The Belarusian delegation will take part in discussing matters concerning the implementation of UN conventions against corruption and against transnational organized crime, including the implementation of the protocol on preventing and suppressing slave trade. The Belarusian delegation will take part in discussing financial and administrative activities of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, international cooperation in the sphere of criminal justice, and global trends and new problems concerning crime prevention and criminal justice.

The Commission will have to discuss ten draft resolutions targeting, among other things, the improvement of control over the operation and financial state of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, consequent operation after the congress, improvement of minimal standard rules for handling convicts, technical aid, fight against terrorism, gender-motivated crimes, and illegal transportation of cultural valuables.
