Belarus pursues predictable foreign policy

Belarus pursues predictable foreign policy

MINSK, 4 August (BelTA) – Belarus does not try to be friends with someone against somebody else and remains committed to a multi-pronged and predictable foreign policy, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he delivered his annual address to the Belarusian people and the National Assembly on 4 August, BelTA has learned.

According to the head of state, today trade disputes turn into political and military conflicts and become a factor of internal destabilization in some countries. He noted that the United States had entered a period of continuous turbulence, Hong Kong in China is in protests and Taiwan began to actively rearm. Contradictions have worsened in the South China Sea region, where huge oil and gas reserves are concentrated. The situation is not calm on the Indian-Chinese border. In order to protect itself, China has to intensify military construction. The border between India and Pakistan, the countries with nuclear weapons, is not calm either, the president said.

“We can see pockets of instability in North Africa, the Middle East. Tensions are growing in respect to Iran, Venezuela, Syria and other countries that pursue independent, freedom-loving policies. The post-Soviet space have been unable to solve a lot of long-standing conflicts for decades. Among them is Transnistria, the Caucasian tangle of contradictions, the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. Ukraine has been added to this list,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

According to the president, today Belarus is on this geopolitical rift. Living by its wits, it has become the only peaceful place in the center of Eurasia. “Russia is afraid of losing us. It has no true close allies but us today. The West has recently started showing more substantial interest in us. China is seriously counting on the stability of its friend. Our answer is known to everyone: Belarus is not friends with someone against someone else. We pursue a multi-pronged, consistent, predictable foreign policy,” the president said.
