Belarus into Fed Cup World Group

MINSK, 18 April (BelTA) – Belarus beat Russia 3-2 in Moscow to reach the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group for the first time in the country’s history, BelTA has learned.

World No.100 Alexandra Sasnovich got the all-important third point for her country after coming from a set down to beat Margarita Gasparyan 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Sasnovich was able to complete the victory for Belarus after World No.5 Victoria Azarenka had produced an excellent display of tennis to beat Russian teenager Darya Kasatkina (World No.32) 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.

Earlier, Victoria Azarenka took a solid win over Margarita Gasparyan (World No.47), 6-2, 6-3, after Alexandra Sasnovich lost the opening match against Darya Kasatkina.

Although the score was 3-1 for Belarus, captains of the teams Eduard Dubrov and Anastasia Myskina decided to give a chance to their pairs. In the doubles match Olga Govortsova and Fed Cup debutant Arina Sobolenko lost to Yelena Vesnina and Darya Kasatkina 4-6, 2-6.

Apart from Belarus the World Group will include the United States (who bear Australia 4-0), Spain (4-0 against Italy) and Germany (4-1 against Romania).

Four semifinalists of the current Fed Cup will also continue their run in the top division: Czech Republic, France, Netherlands, Switzerland.

Lukashenko congratulates women’s tennis team on Fed Cup victory

MINSK, 18 April (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has congratulated the Belarusian women’s tennis team on the victory in the Fed Cup match against Russia, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian leader.

“The Belarusian women’s tennis team have occupied a deserved place in the Fed Cup World Group, and today you have claimed this historical victory in a difficult match against Russian tennis players in Moscow. The whole country was watching this matches heart aflutter in which you have demonstrated genuine perseverance and the will to win. Thank you very much for this victory?” the message of greetings reads.

The President expressed confidence that Belarusian tennis players will gain a foothold in their elite position and will glorify Belarus at the biggest tennis tournaments.
