Belarus claim gold in UIPM 2015 World Cup Final mixed relayMINSK, 11 June (BelTA) – The Belarusian duo of Yekaterina Orel and Ilya Polozkov claimed the victory in the mixed relay of the UIPM 2015 World Cup Final that kicked off in the Belarusian capital Minsk on 11 June, BelTA informs.

The Belarusians collected gold with the total of 1,467 points. Silver went to Ireland’s Natalya Coyle and Arthur Lanigan O'Keeffe with 1,449 points. Korea’s Mina Jeong and Woongtae Jun earned 1,440 points to win bronze.

The Belarusian duet claimed 26 wins and 258 points in the first event, fencing, to take the leading position. They also won the fencing bonus round. The sixth position In swimming and show jumping did not hamper Yekaterina Orel and Ilya Polozkov to keep the lead. In the combined event of pistol shooting and a 3200m cross-country run the Belarusians finished third in 11:52.89.

This year competing for the medals in this discipline were 10 countries. Russia finished four with 1433 points. It was followed by Egypt (1403), Kazakhstan (1394), Czech Republic (1387), Guatemala (1354), Mexico (1343), and Argentina (1337).

Mixed relays are a non-Olympic sport. The International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) is doing its best to get the event included into the program of the 2020 Olympics.

Yekaterina Orel of Belarus in fencing eventThe winners of the men’s and women’s individual events in the 2015 World Cup Final will earn the 2016 Olympic Games berths. Partaking in the competitions will be 72 best athletes (36 men and 36 women in line with the 2015 UIPM World Cup international rating). The program of the competition does not envisage a qualifying round.
