UNDP donates medical goods to Belarus

MINSK, 11 June (BelTA) – The UNDP has donated medical goods worth $10,000 to Belarus with Russia’s assistance. The ceremony to hand over the goods took place in Minsk on 11 June, BelTA has learned.

The medical goods – 70,000 nitrile gloves – were handed over to the Belarusian Healthcare Ministry. They will be distributed between clinics and hospitals across the country later on.

The donation was organized and financed using some of the resources of the UNDP’s project designed to assist the Belarusian government with joining the World Trade Organization. The project is being implemented with Russia’s assistance and in partnership with the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Belarusian Deputy Healthcare Minister Boris Androsyuk thanked the UNDP, the Russian government and the embassy for aid.

Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chief Negotiator on Belarus' accession to the WTO Vladimir Serpikov noted: “It is an act of solidarity with our medics, with the healthcare system. I hope it will help the medics, who are on the frontline of fighting the new illness, to handle this disaster and feel more comfortable in the course of their work.”

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Belarus Dmitry Mezentsev stressed that both sides closely cooperate in many areas. Today’s donation is one episode in effective interaction of three sides – Belarus, Russia, and the UNDP. “We didn’t look forward to and didn’t call for this disaster – COVID-19. It is kind of a trial for us. A trial of our comradeship, brotherly relations, the ability to listen to each other and help,” he said.

In turn, UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Alexandra Solovieva also drew attention to the need for mutual aid and solidarity for the sake of overcoming the problems caused by the spreading coronavirus infection. “Today we saw the kind of multilateral partnership that will allow supporting the Healthcare Ministry and the people, who will use these means of protection,” she noted.
