USA grateful to Belarus, Russia, Ukraine in V-E Day anniversary commemoration

MINSK, 11 May (BelTA) – Events timed to the 70th anniversary of the Victory took place in European countries and the USA, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.

Charge d'Affaires ad interim of Belarus in the USA Pavel Shidlovsky took part in the ceremony of laying wreaths in the National WWII Memorial in Washington on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Victory. Upon Barack Obama’s instructions the President’s National Security Advisor, Ambassador Susan Rice conveyed the gratitude of the U.S. nation to the Allied countries that won the war. Susan Rice conveyed special gratitude to Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine that suffered considerable losses during the war.

The embassies of Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan organized ceremonies to lay wreaths in Hungary. Wreaths were laid in Szabadsag Square in Budapest where the monument to Soviet soldiers, who liberated Budapest, has been erected, and at Budapest’s Kerepesi Cemetery, the largest graveyard where remains of over 7,000 soldiers are buried. The Embassy of Belarus also took part in the ceremony to lay wreaths at the monument to Soviet soldiers, who died during the liberation of Hungary in Kaposvar. On 13 May representatives of the Embassy will take part in the reburial of remains of Soviet soldiers in Miskolc.

Solemn events to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War Two took place in Lithuania where flowers were laid at the monuments in the Paneriai Memorial and the Antakalnis Cemetery in Vilnius. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Lithuania Alexander Korol visited military graves, laid wreaths and flowers at the St. Euphrosyne Cemetery and the Antakalnis Cemetery.

Personnel of the Embassy of Belarus in Israel took part in festivities in the city of Kiryat Yam to mark the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. War veterans were congratulated on behalf of the Belarusian diplomatic mission. Flowers were laid at the memorial in memory of the 350,000 Jewish soldiers, who died on World War Two frontlines.

Consul General of Belarus in Bialystok Alexander Berebenya took part in festivities timed to the end of the Great Patriotic War. He laid a wreath at the military graveyard. A monument to war victims was unveiled after renovation in one of the streets in Bialystok where a camp for Soviet prisoners of war used to be.
