70th anniversary of the Great Victory

8 May 2015

Russian ambassador praises Belarus’ contribution to Great Patriotic War victory

MINSK, 8 May (BelTA) – As a country of partisans Belarus made a special contribution to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The statement was made by Ambassador of Russia to Belarus Alexander Surikov during the ceremony held on 8 May to award medals to Russian veterans, who permanently live in Belarus. The medals mark the 70th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War Victory, BelTA has learned.

“Thanks to the veterans we are alive, our children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren are alive. It is difficult to imagine what would have happened to our countries that made the Great Victory possible as part of the Soviet Union. Certainly, as a country of partisans Belarus made a special contribution to the Victory. Besides, Belarus suffered more than others during the war,” said Alexander Surikov.

The Ambassador noted that the theories of Nazism and national socialism are extremely dangerous for the mankind. “They propagate racism, elimination of entire nations, and holocausts. Thanks to efforts of Soviet citizens on the frontlines and on the homefront the world managed to avoid all of that. Our generations are sincerely grateful to you for that,” he added.

On 8 May medals to mark the 70th anniversary of the Victory were bestowed upon 77 Russian veterans, who permanently live in Belarus. According to the Embassy of Russia in Minsk, about 250 Russian veterans live in Belarus.
