MINSK, 22 February (BelTA) – Elections in Belarus might take place in autumn, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina said during an online video briefing on the website of the National Press Center, BelTA has learned.

The CEC chief spoke about preparations for the forthcoming elections. “I think that the elections will be held in autumn, not summer,” she said. Lidia Yermoshina expressed hope that the election campaign will be scheduled for the end of autumn. Lidia Yermoshina noted that she personally would like 1 December, Sunday, to be the election day.

The term of office of the president and the parliament is expiring in 2020. The law allows holding the presidential and parliamentary campaigns simultaneously. However, according to the Belarusian election traditions, the presidential election does not overlap with other elections. “The president has reiterated many times that there will be two election campaigns: one in 2019 and the other in 2020. No one knows when each of the campaigns will be held and which of them will come first. The Central Election Commission does not have information about it yet. We hope that the mystery will be unraveled during the constitutional address of the head of state. As a rule, the head of state makes important political statements during this address,” Lidia Yermoshina said.

The CEC is gearing up for the two campaigns and is drawing up election guidelines that will be used by election commissions. “Like always, we will prepare separate guidelines for each of the elections in order to be ready for both of them,” the CEC chief noted.
