Year of Science Strategic Council set up in Belarus

MINSK, 1 March (BelTA) – A Strategic Council for the 2017 Year of Science was set up in Belarus. The relevant decision was made at the meeting of the Presidium of Belarus’ National Academy of Sciences (NASB) on 1 March, BelTA learned from the NASB press service.

The NASB Presidium approved the council’s membership and its rules and regulations. The council is composed of senior officials of the national and local authorities, heads of scientific and other non-governmental organizations, heads of educational institutions, and Belarus’ leading scientists from various branches of science. The structure of the Strategic Council includes a bureau for resolving operational issues consisting of the Chairman, the Deputy Chairmen, and the Secretary of the Strategic Council. Chairman of the NASB Presidium Vladimir Gusakov has been approved for the position of the Chairman of the Strategic Council for the 2017 Year of Science. Belarus’ Education Minister Igor Karpenko and Chairman of Belarus’ State Science and Technology Committee Alexander Shumilin have been approved as the Deputy Chairmen of the Council.

Besides the coordination of the events of the 2017 Year of Science, the Strategic Council will also take actions to ensure the effective implementation of the Year of Science plan of events. The Council is to adopt measures to enhance the efficiency and further development of scientific and innovative activity in Belarus, to strengthen the cooperation between science, economy and social area to provide the sustainable development of the country.

The Council will make recommendations for the Belarusian ministries and agencies on enhancing the efficiency of the measures to increase a scientific contribution to the social and economic development of the country, including long-term plans. The Council will also issue recommendations regarding the foresights for the scientific and technological development of Belarus up to 2030, the analysis and evaluation of its results, etc.

The Strategic Council for the 2017 Year of Science is an advisory body.
