WHO pledges further necessary assistance to Belarus

MINSK, 27 October (BelTA) - The World Health Organization will continue to provide necessary assistance to the Belarusian government in accordance with the national priorities, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said during a meeting with Belarus’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and Other International Organizations in Geneva Yuri Ambrazevich, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The parties discussed the current status and prospects for the development of cooperation with the WHO headquarters in Geneva, the WHO Office in Minsk and the WHO Regional Office for Europe in Copenhagen. The parties expressed satisfaction with the content and dynamics of cooperation.

Taking into account the ongoing work on the preparation of the WHO regular four-year framework program Yuri Ambrazevich stressed the need to preserve an adequate response of the WHO to the needs of the middle-income states such as Belarus.

The WHO director noted the efforts of Belarus to improve and strengthen the capacities of the national health system in primary health care, prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, in combating noncommunicable diseases and introducing the screening for breast cancer. The WHO director supported Belarus’ idea to conduct, on the margins of the 71st session of the organization, a presentation of the Belarusian system of medical education for foreign students and the national pharmaceutical industry.
