Visit of PAP president to Belarus seen as important step to boost cooperation

MINSK, 7 December (BelTA) - The visit of the president of the Pan-African Parliament in Belarus will be an important step towards strengthening cooperation, Andrei Savinykh, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, told the media on 7 December, BelTA has learned.

“We considered the issue of inviting the president of the Pan-African Parliament to Belarus at the meeting of the Council of the House of Representatives. This international organization brings together 55 African states, with many of which we have already established fruitful and constructive relations. There are more than 15 friendship groups on contacts with parliaments of African states in the National Assembly of Belarus. We see that the African continent is a very rapidly growing region both economically and socially. We have good prospects for bilateral cooperation,” said Andrei Savinykh.

“We believe that an official visit of the head of the parliament will be another important step to strengthen our cooperation,” the MP said.

The Pan-African Parliament (PAP) is an organ of the African Union. Its first session took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in March 2004. The PAP currently has 275 members representing the 55 member states of the African Union. The PAP is led by a chairperson and four deputy chairpersons representing five regions of Africa (Northern, Central, Western, Eastern and Southern). Together they form the Bureau. In June 2022, Senator of the Zimbabwean Parliament Fortune Charumbira was elected President of the Pan-African Parliament.
