Viktor Lukashenko named acting NOC first vice president

MINSK, 15 April (BelTA) - Aide to the Belarus president for national security affairs Viktor Lukashenko will perform the duties of the first vice president of the National Olympic Committee. The relevant decision was taken at the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Olympic Committee on 15 April, BelTA has learned.

Viktor Lukashenko’s candidacy was proposed and unanimously supported during the meeting of the NOC Executive Committee. He will perform these duties on a temporary and voluntary basis and combine this activity with his duties as the Belarus president’s aide.

Once the major international sporting events in Belarus are over, the Olympic meeting will decide on the nomination for the post of the NOC first vice president.

As acting first vice president Viktor Lukashenko shall be in charge of international cooperation and preparations for the major sports forums in Belarus: the 2nd European Games and Europe vs United States athletics match, which will be held in September of the current year. The acting NOC first vice president will work in cooperation with the sport and tourism minister and the vice prime minister supervising sports.

According to Belarus’ Sports and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk, the date for the Olympic meeting has not been yet named. He expressed confidence that the event would be held after the European Games and Europe vs United States athletics match. “I think the meeting will take place somewhere closer to winter, after all major championships,” he said.

Sergei Kovalchuk added that the Olympic meeting would also address a number of other personnel issues within the National Olympic Committee.

It was emphasized at the meeting of the NOC Executive Committee that forthcoming major sports forums would help add an additional impetus to sport development in the country. The final readiness of the facilities is monitored by the minister. Aleksandr Lukashenko criticized the state of the turf at Dinamo Stadium during the recent football match.
