Valovaya: Belarus plays an active role in key UN projects in Geneva

GENEVA, 10 September (BelTA) - Belarus is actively involved in every key project at the United Nations platform in Geneva, Tatiana Valovaya, Deputy Secretary-General and Director-General of the UN Office at Geneva, said in an exclusive interview with BelTA.

She emphasized the importance of the fact that Belarus was one of the founding countries of the Organization and has been actively participating in its activities for 81 years.

“I want to thank Belarus for its active work in Geneva and for supporting many of our initiatives. We greatly value the fact that Belarus consistently supports international cooperation and consistently advocates for the priority of international cooperation over other forms of interaction. You advocate for inclusive cooperation, for ensuring that the voice of every country is heard,” Tatiana Valovaya said.

The head of the UN Office at Geneva separately touched upon Belarus’ role in promoting the sustainable development agenda.

“Belarus is one of the first states to have begun developing this topic very actively. I remember taking part myself in a sustainable development event organized in Minsk in 2013, when this topic was only beginning to develop; at that time I was working at the Eurasian Economic Commission. Even then, Belarus’ very active role in carrying this topic forward was noted. So I want to thank Belarus for its active presence in UN projects on the key agendas of our cooperation,” Tatiana Valovaya said.

She emphasized that about 9,000 conferences are held annually at the UN platform in Geneva. “That is a large number of events. As a secretariat, we interact closely with other international organizations, including organizations of the United Nations system,” the head of the UN Office at Geneva said. “It is a very complex ecosystem. Since, naturally, all our agencies are completely independent agencies and other structures of the organization. And our task here is precisely to interact closely.”

In honor of the Year of the Belarusian Woman, Tatiana Valovaya was presented with the book Women's Destinies are the Destiny of United Belarus, published by BelTA. It was presented by the book’s author, Alina Grishkevich.
