U.S. embassies to continue scheduled visa services during shutdown

MINSK, 23 January (BelTA) – The U.S. embassies will continue scheduled visa and passport services during the lapse in government appropriations, as the situation permits, BelTA has learned from the website of the U.S. Embassy in Belarus.

“The U.S. Embassy would like to note that at this time scheduled passport and visa services at U.S. embassies and consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations, as the situation permits,” the statement reads.

The representatives of the embassy said that due to the lapse in U.S. government appropriations, the U.S. Embassy in Minsk is required to curtail all public activities, with the exception of those necessary for emergencies involving the safety of human life or the protection of property, and those necessary for activities essential to national security.

It was also noted that for this reason the U.S. Embassy is unable to participate as guest of honor at the 26th Minsk International Book Fair. “We thank the Government of Belarus for the honor and will be discussing potential cultural partnerships once the lapse in appropriations ends,” the embassy representatives added.

The Information Ministry will nonetheless organize presentation of books by American authors who will take part in the 26th Minsk International Book Fair.
