UNGA expected to adopt Belarus-initiated resolution on Chernobyl
MINSK, 8 December (BelTA) - The UN General Assembly is expected to adopt Belarus-initiated resolution on the long-term impact of the Chernobyl disaster at the 71st session, spokesman for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Mironchik told a press briefing on 8 December.
“Our country has drafted this resolution and held negotiations on it. The sponsors of the resolution include now about 30 countries, including Russia and Ukraine,” Dmitry Mironchik said.
The document is based on the decisions adopted at the international conference dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the accident held in Minsk in April this year.
In accordance with the resolution the UN calendar of observances will include the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Chernobyl Disaster which the international community will mark on 26 April annually starting 2017. In practical terms, the resolution focuses on the continuation of international cooperation under the auspices of the United Nations to overcome the impact of the Chernobyl disaster on the basis of partnership, innovation and investment in sustainable development of the affected regions.
“The adoption of this document is in the national interests of not only Belarus, which was hit the worst by the Chernobyl accident, but also other countries in the region, particularly Ukraine and Russia, and the international community as a whole.
