UNGA adopts Belarus-initiated resolution to prohibit development of new types of weapons

MINSK, 11 November (BelTA) - On the initiative of the Republic of Belarus, the First Committee of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly adopted by an absolute majority the resolution “Prohibition of the development and production of new types of weapons of mass destruction and new systems of such weapons: report of the Conference on Disarmament” on 10 November 2020, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“In the resolution, which is of a preventive nature, UN member states reaffirm the need to take effective measures to prevent the emergence of new types of weapons of mass destruction, including with the involvement of the potential of the UN Conference on Disarmament. The Belarusian resolution was co-sponsored by 35 states representing almost all regions of the world, which testifies to the comprehensive and universal character of the document,” the press service noted.

On 10 November 2020 the UN General Assembly First Committee also adopted by consensus the resolution “Report of the Conference on Disarmament” introduced at the initiative of Belarus (as one of the chairmen of the Conference on Disarmament in 2020). The resolution summed up the results of the work of the Conference over the past year and emphasized its role as the only multilateral forum on disarmament issues.
