MINSK, 14 April (BelTA) – The UNDP is launching a new mechanism to provide prompt support to Belarus in combating the spread of the COVID-19 virus and handling the social and economic impact, BelTA learned from the UNDP press service.

The organization will join forces with national and local partners, international organizations, UN agencies, business and provide $250,000 in aid. The funds will be used to support the national healthcare system, help the most vulnerable groups, analyze the consequences and pilot short- and long-term solutions to overcome the negative impact of coronavirus on the social sector and the economy of Belarus.

The package of specific assistance measures includes assistance with prompt purchase of quality equipment, medical protection equipment and medicines to enhance the capacities of the national healthcare system to respond to the challenges of COVID-19. It also envisages joint work with business, national and local partners to support and develop the volunteer movement, which is necessary to help vulnerable groups, including the elderly and people with disabilities. The social and economic consequences of COVID-19 in Belarus will also be assessed.

One of the measures will be to pilot digital and innovative solutions to support regional development and social mobilization. “This will help Belarus to quickly and effectively cope with both today's challenges and the consequences of the pandemic in the medium and long term, to ensure full recovery and sustainable social and economic development of the country in the future. In developing solutions, the UNDP's program activities in Belarus will be taken as a basis,” the press service explained.

Particular attention will be paid to partnership with mass media and using digital technologies to inform the public about COVID-19 in a qualitative and timely manner and to deal with its consequences.

The UNDP calls on all partners to join the response to COVID-19 and jointly develop long-term recovery solutions.
