UNDP Administrator to visit Minsk to mark Chernobyl 30th anniversary

MINSK, 11 February (BelTA) – UNDP Administrator Helen Clark is expected to visit Minsk ahead of the 30th anniversary of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Helen Clark discussed the details of her visit with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Valentin Rybakov at a meeting in the UN headquarters in New York on 10 February. It is expected that while in Belarus Helen Clark, as coordinator of the UN international cooperation on Chernobyl, will take part in the conference to mark the 30th anniversary of the accident. The parties also exchanged opinions on the joint participation in other events marking the date and analyzed the international Chernobyl cooperation in general.

The parties noted that further joint work of the UN organizations, Belarus, Russia, Ukraine and other stakeholders would meet the interests of the international community in preventing man-made disasters, preserving the experience in the mitigation of their consequences, restoration and sustainable development of the hit regions.

Valentin Rybakov and Helen Clark also talked over the prospects for the UNDP participation in establishing mutually beneficial relations between the integration associations in the Eurasian region. Such cooperation designed to promote peaceful sustainable development was suggested by Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko as the integration of integrations idea at the 2015 UN Summit.
