UN supports Belarus’ approaches to promoting role of family

MINSK, 9 December (BelTA) – Belarus’ approaches to promoting the role of the traditional family in the context of achieving sustainable development goals were supported at the consultative meeting held at the United Nations Headquarters, BelTA learnt from the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The consultative meeting on the issues of promotion of the family in the context of implementation of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development was held at the initiative of Belarus, Egypt and Qatar in their capacity as co-chairs of the Group of Friends of the Family on 8 December. A number of the US-based international non-governmental organizations took part in the meeting along with 25 member states of the Group.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Valentin Rybakov noted in his speech that the institution of the family should be considered by the international community as a solution for many challenges the society is facing today, especially in the context of achieving sustainable development goals. He called upon like-minded countries to elaborate an action plan to prepare the group for the UN official meetings and events scheduled for 2016 to ensure the integration and recognition of the role of the family in the process of attaining the sustainable development goals.

Representatives of Egypt, Qatar, Iran, Nigeria, Russia, Saudi Arabia and non-governmental organizations supported Belarus’ approaches and shared their vision on the ways to promote the traditional family in the UN.
