UN Secretary General may visit Belarus in 2016

MINSK, 10 December (BelTA) – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon may visit Belarus in 2016, UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Sanaka Samarasinha said at an international seminar to discuss the implementation of the Universal Periodic Review and the consideration of the coordinated approach, BelTA has learned.

“We expect a visit of the UN head to Belarus in the near future,” said Sanaka Samarasinha.

The seminar has been organized to share the best practices in implementing the recommendations of the Universal Periodic Review. Partaking in the seminar are foreign experts, representatives of the UN Office of High Commissioner of Human Rights, government bodies of Belarus, public organizations.

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a unique process which involves a review of the human rights records of all UN Member States. The Republic of Belarus completed the second cycle of the Universal Periodic Review in May 2015.
