UN Deputy Secretary General to visit Belarus on 20-21 February

MINSK, 14 February (BelTA) - UN Deputy Secretary General Amina J. Mohammed plans to make a working visit to Belarus on 2021 February, BelTA learned from the press service of the Council of the Republic.

The UN deputy secretary general plans to attend the Regional Forum of Sustainable Development Goals Coordinators in Minsk on 21 February.

The UN high official is scheduled to meet with Mikhail Myasnikovich, the Chairman of the Council of the Republic, and Marianna Shchetkina, Deputy Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic, National Coordinator for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Amina J. Mohammed is also set to visit the national rehabilitation center for children with disabilities and the National Library where she will meet with representatives of the youth of Belarus, including young MPs.

The Forum of National SDG Coordinators in Minsk is expected to bring together representatives of more than 40 countries. These will be high government officials and representatives of international organizations. The forum participants will share the experiences in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and discuss the implementation of the Agenda-2030. “Such dialogue will facilitate the dissemination of the best practices and innovative approaches to the achieving of the SDGs, will provide a platform for the establishment of a regional network of national SDG coordinators,” the press service noted.

The United Nations adopted the Agenda-2030 on 25 September 2015. It includes 17 goals aimed at eradicating poverty, fighting inequality and injustice, mitigating the climate change. Belarus has already taken several important steps to achieve the SDGs. The government has approved the national strategy of sustainable social and economic development up to 2030. The head of state has appointed Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic Marianna Shchetkina as national coordinator for the SDGs. In achieving the SDGs the government cooperates with the business community, civil society and international organizations.
