UN Commission adopts Belarus-sponsored resolution on prevention of trafficking in human organs

MINSK, 30 May (BelTA) – The UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice adopted Belarus-sponsored resolution on the prevention and suppression of trafficking in human organs and trafficking in human beings for the purpose of organ removal at the 25th session in Vienna on 27 May, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Belarusian initiative aims to attract wide attention of the international community to such a poorly studied transnational crime as trafficking in human organs. “Discussion on the Belarusian resolution showed the urgency of this issue, both in the context of the development of transplantation, and also the growing involvement of terrorist groups in offences related to trafficking in human organs,” the press service noted.

The resolution instructs the UN Office on Drugs and Crime to prepare a study on the problem of trafficking in human organs, in cooperation with UN Member States and international organizations concerned.

The Belarusian resolution was co-sponsored by Indonesia, Spain, Cuba, Russia, Serbia and Ecuador.
