UK’s status as GoH at Minsk Book Fair seen as good opportunity to strengthen ties

MINSK, 21 December (BelTA) – Being the Guest of Honor at the 24th International Book Fair in Minsk, the United Kingdom will have an opportunity to strengthen the ties with Belarus and promote British literature, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Belarus Fionna Gibb said at the international conference of publishers, printers and distributors Market of Printed Products: New Challenges, New Strategies, BelTA has learned.

The UK stand titled "The Great British Book" will celebrate the English language, British literature, and the country’s publishing industry. The choice of the theme is inspired by the fact that English is the language of business and modern technology.

Ambassador Fionna Gibb added that the expo will feature a workshop for Belarusian specialists and British publishers. The participants will consider opportunities for developing partner relations with British businesses. The program of the expo also includes a lecture on the economic development of the United Kingdom.

Besides, plans have been made to hold a workshop for Belarusian school students and English teachers, presentations of programs and scholarships for study in the UK, meetings with the alumni of British colleges and universities, and presentations of Belarusian books translated into English.

The Guest of Honor presentation will feature a performance by bagpipers.

Ambassador Fionna Gibb believes that participation in such a prestigious event as the International Book Fair in Minsk will help the UK to step up the cooperation with Belarusian publishers and fill the shelves of Belarusian bookstores with English-language books.
