Ukrainian regions called to strengthen cooperation with Belarus’ Vitebsk Oblast

VITEBSK, 23 April (BelTA) – Ukrainian regions need to intensify cooperation with Belarus’ Vitebsk Oblast and reach new agreements, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Belarus Igor Kizim told the media after the meeting in the Vitebsk Oblast Executive Committee, BelTA has learned.

It was noted at the meeting that the relations between the Ukrainian regions and Vitebsk Oblast have been not intensive enough recently. Despite the increasing mutual trade, Ukraine has not been actively investing in the northern region of Belarus. There are no long-term production cooperation relations between companies. There are 27 Ukrainian-funded companies in Vitebsk Oblast. These are mainly small enterprises.

“We are currently preparing for the 2nd Forum of Regions of Belarus and Ukraine which is due in Zhitomir in October 2019. We have also invited Vitebsk Oblast to showcase their companies. We need to intensify regional cooperation, reach new contracts between Vitebsk Oblast and Ukrainian regions. Moreover, the process of decentralization is in full swing in our country. Regions have got not only freedom to cooperate but also considerable funds to invest in the economic development of the oblasts,” the ambassador said.

Vitebsk Oblast Vice Governor Vladimir Penin also emphasized the interest in the development of bilateral relations in various sectors, increasing the number of joint economic projects. He invited Ukraine to take part in the international economic forum Innovations. Investment. Prospects which is due to take place in Vitebsk on 16-17 May.
