UK shows interest in strengthening cooperation with Belarus

MINSK, 27 January (BelTA) – The UK shows interest in strengthening cooperation with Belarus, UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said in his protocol letter to Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei as the two countries mark the 25th anniversary of the diplomatic relations, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The letter was handed by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the UK to Belarus Fionna Gibb as she met with Belarus’ Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Oleg Kravchenko on 27 January. “In his letter Boris Johnson emphasized the UK’s interest in strengthening bilateral cooperation with Belarus in the matters of mutual interest,” the press service said.

On the same day Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to the UK Sergei Aleinik met with Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia in the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Michael Tatham. The Belarusian diplomat handed over a similar protocol letter from Vladimir Makei to the head of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office. “The minister stressed that the UK was one of the first states to establish diplomatic relations with Belarus,” the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed.
