Two readings for Belarusian citizenship bill

Two readings for Belarusian citizenship bill

MINSK, 14 December (BelTA) – The bill to amend the law on citizenship of the Republic of Belarus passed two readings at the sitting of the ninth session of the House of Representatives of the seventh convocation, BelTA has learned.

The bill was submitted to the House of Representatives by the Council of Ministers. It is aimed at improving the legislation on citizenship taking its enforcement practice into account, ensuring national security, addressing tasks stipulated by the migration policy.

The bill obliges applicants to take the oath of allegiance and introduces an additional ground for canceling the decision to grant citizenship of the Republic of Belarus in the event when an applicant refuses to take the oath, and regulates the procedure for assessing official language proficiency. The bill also obliges a citizen of the Republic of Belarus to notify the competent authorities in writing or in electronic form of holding citizenship of a foreign state, a residence permit or another document of a foreign state that confers benefits and other advantages in connection with political, religious views or nationality.

The bill establishes a new ground for the loss of citizenship - a ruling of the court of the Republic of Belarus that has entered into force, confirming the participation of a person in extremist activities or infliction by a person of serious harm to the interests of the Republic of Belarus, if such a person is outside the country.
