MINSK, 20 July (BelTA) – Today’s new appointments are very important in the history of the Belarusian diplomatic service, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told reporters after the presidential appointments, BelTA has learned.

“I cannot think of such important countries and such a high level of new appointments in the history pf the president's new appointments days during my time as minister," said Vladimir Makei. “You can see that the countries to which ambassadors have been appointed today play an important role both in the region and in the world as a whole. Our relations with them have been developing dynamically and progressively,” Vladimir Makei noted.

The minister expressed confidence that the people who have been appointed to all these positions will be working in earnest in the interests of the state.

Speaking about trade and economic relations, Vladimir Makei noted that Belarus had a trade of more than $3 billion with the United Kingdom, over $2 billion with the Netherlands, and almost $1 billion with the United States and Kazakhstan (last year).

“Austria plays an important role for us both in terms of economic cooperation and as a country that hosts the headquarters of many regional and international organizations: the OSCE, a number of UN agencies. Interaction with them is of great importance for us,” the minister stressed.

“Despite the situation with the pandemic, we continue to keep in touch with the ambassadors of these states accredited in Belarus, and also their colleagues,” he said. “I am convinced that the situation with the absence of personal contacts due to the pandemic will be over soon and we will have an opportunity for more detailed discussion of all the matters related to the further gradual movement towards each other,” the Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs said.

As BelTA has reported earlier, the president appointed new ambassadors to the United States, the Netherlands, Austria, the UK and Kazakhstan on 20 July.

First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Yeudachenka was named Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to the Netherlands. Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs Oleg Kravchenko and Andrei Dapkiunas were appointed Ambassadors to the United States and Austria respectively. Andrei Dapkiunas will also serve as Ambassador of Belarus to Slovenia with concurrent accreditation and will be Belarus’ Permanent Representative to international organizations in Vienna and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

Former Industry Minister Pavel Utyupin was named Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Kazakhstan, while former Finance Minister Maksim Yermolovich – Ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and also Ireland with concurrent accreditation.

Current Ambassador to the UK Sergei Aleinik will replace Oleg Kravchenko at the post of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. Belarus’ Ambassador to Italy Aleksandr Guryanov was appointed First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
