Sweden seeks closer ties with Gomel Oblast

GOMEL, 22 November (BelTA) - Sweden would like to expand bilateral cooperation with Gomel Oblast, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sweden to Belarus Christina Johannesson told the media after her meeting with Gomel Mayor Piotr Kirichenko on 22 November, BelTA has learned.

According to the diplomat, the cooperation between Gomel Oblast and Sweden needs to be developed further.

In her words, today’s economy of any country largely depends on small and medium-sized business. The Swedish delegation to Belarus, therefore, comprised representatives of five Swedish companies. “Companies know better where to go and with whom to establish contacts. I hope that the current visit will become a starting point for long-term cooperation,” she stressed.

During the meeting the parties discussed possible forms of cooperation in cultural and humanitarian sectors. “Youth may help expand our relations. For example, there are a lot of areas of mutual interest in the education sector,” Gomel Mayor Piotr Kirichenko said.

The ambassador also met with Gomel Governor Vladimir Dvornik. According to the press secretary of the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee, the Gomel governor expressed hope that the parties would be able to increase mutual trade by joint efforts. He also suggested hosting a forum for Swedish business in Gomel to talk over the preferences that Gomel Oblast provides to foreign investors and the possibility of acquiring property at the price of one base amount (Br23).

During the three-day visit to Gomel Oblast on 21-23 November Ambassador Christina Johannesson is set to visit the largest enterprises of the region. On 21 November, the Ambassador visited Svetlogorsk Pulp and Board Plant and Rechitsa Metalware Plant. On 22 November, she is expected to visit Belorusneft, Gomel Chemical Plant, the furniture factory Progress, and Gomelsteklo. On the third day the diplomat is set to meet with students and professors of Gomel universities.

The Swedish diplomat is also expected to attend the premiere of the children’s musical in Belarusian Palyavanne na Lisa (Fox Hunting), and visit a number of museums and historical and cultural institutions. On 22 November, Gomel will host a presentation of Swedish Nobel Prize winner Tomas Transtromer’s book translated into Belarusian. The event is organized by the Swedish Embassy in Minsk. “This is my first visit to Gomel Oblast in particular and Belarusian regions in general, and I can see that there are a lot of interesting initiatives and ideas that merit consideration,” Ambassador Christina Johannesson said.
