Some 22,719 candidates vying for seats on local councils of deputies in Belarus

MINSK, 11 January (BelTA) – A total of 22,719 candidates are vying for seats on the local councils of deputies of the 28th convocation in Belarus, Chairperson of Belarus’ Central Election Commission Lidia Yermoshina told BelTA.

“Some 22,719 people have been nominated across 18,111 election constituencies in Belarus,” Lidia Yermoshina said.

Thus, the number of candidates per constituency is 1.2 people.

According to the CEC head, the greatest political activity is in the city of Minsk, with 6 candidates per one constituency on average.

The local election commissions are now verifying the documents submitted by the candidates to register them afterwards. This stage of the election campaign will last till 18 January. After the registration the candidates will be able to start campaigning: to address the media, hold rallies and pickets, and present their programs to voters. Campaigning will last till 17 February, inclusively. Campaigning is prohibited on the voting day.

The local elections in Belarus are scheduled for 18 February 2018. Early voting will be held from 13 to 17 February. A total of 22,700 members of the local councils were nominated at the previous elections in 2014. The number of constituencies was bigger then, with 18,800 members of the local councils elected.
