MINSK, 19 December (BelTA) – Sergei Sivets has been elected Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Belarus. The decision was made unanimously through an open vote at the 7th Belarusian People’s Congress on 19 December, BelTA has learned.
“This is a significant milestone in a person’s life, particularly for a young man whom we are promoting to such a high office. We sincerely hope he will be a great representative and chairman of the Constitutional Court,” Belarusian President and Chairman of the Belarusian People’s Congress Aleksandr Lukashenko said addressing Sergei Sivets.
The head of state noted that the Constitutional Court employs the nation’s finest legal experts, whose expertise should be utilized more extensively in drafting Belarusian laws and legislation. “This applies especially to oversight and, perhaps, preliminary review. Why should we use postulates imposed by so-called democratic countries? We have our own nation. We must always draft the laws by which we will live and work. And we will create better laws so they do not require such frequent amendments,” the president emphasized.
In addition, Natalya Karpovich, Pavel Gridyushko, Aleksandr Karavai, Andrei Kovalchuk, Tatiana Protashchik, and Yelena Semashko were unanimously elected judges of the Constitutional Court.
