Scientific council for coronavirus being set up at IAAS

MINSK, 20 May (BelTA) - The scientific council for coronavirus is being set up at the International Association of the Academies of Sciences (IAAS), Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) Vladimir Gusakov said during the first video conference meeting of the national interagency working group for COVID-19 response, BelTA learned from the NASB press service. 

The group will involve leading foreign scientists. “The National Academy of Sciences cooperates with different Chinese organizations. We held a series of talks with research laboratories of the People's Republic of China on joint R&D. We are currently setting up the scientific council for coronavirus at the International Association of Academies of Sciences. Some academies of sciences have already sent their proposals regarding comprehensive strategic solutions for working in unfavorable conditions,” Vladimir Gusakov said. In particular, there is an agreement to join forces with the Russian Academy of Sciences.

According to Vladimir Gusakov, Belarusian experts have carried out serious preparatory work, analyzed the development of the situation with COVID-19 in the country and the world. “We have analyzed the R&D groundwork in the field of prevention and treatment. We have received the proposals from other organizations to include specialists, scientists and practitioners working on the front line. We have looked into the main areas where the joint work will be most productive. The working group should become a communication platform for working out scientifically based proposals, the latest developments of domestic and foreign experts,” he said.

The national interagency working group for COVID-19 response was set up by Resolution No.223 of the NASB Presidium of 18 May 2020. The group includes more than 30 specialists representing academic and university science. The aim of the group is to organize and coordinate the activities of scientists and medical professionals throughout the country to implement the measures to tackle the coronavirus. At the first meeting the group discussed the regulation on the interagency group, the plan of scientific research to develop new technologies for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19.
