Ryzhenkov praises momentum in Belarus-DPRK relations

MINSK, 2 June (BelTA) - Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxim Ryzhenkov met with Minister of External Economic Relations of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Yun Jong Ho in Minsk on 2 June, BelTA has learned.

Maxim Ryzhenkov noted that the members of the DPRK delegation that arrived in Belarus represent virtually all areas of potential cooperation between Minsk and Pyongyang.

“The active phase of the development of relations between our countries began about two years ago. I am very pleased with the results we have today. Most importantly, we have established very close and sincere relations between the leaders of our countries. This is the key to success,” the head of the Belarusian foreign ministry emphasized.

In this regard, Maxim Ryzhenkov drew attention to the recent visit of the Belarusian leader to the DPRK. “The fact that in such a short period of time we were able to prepare and, in our view, very successfully carry out the visit of the Belarusian president to the DPRK is a tremendous achievement in our relations. The level of reception given to the Belarusian delegation by esteemed Chairman of State Affairs of the DPRK Kim Jong Un was unprecedented,” the minister said.

As BelTA reported earlier, the first official visit of the president of Belarus to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea took place on 25-26 March. One of the important steps in developing cooperation was the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Belarus and the DPRK, signed by the two leaders in Pyongyang.

Belarus and the DPRK also concluded around ten agreements and memorandums on cooperation in specific areas, including education, healthcare, agriculture, culture, physical education and sports, the information sphere, as well as cooperation through the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In addition, the head of state instructed officials to open a Belarusian embassy in the DPRK and to accelerate work on a visa waiver agreement for citizens.
