MOSCOW, 19 September (BelTA) – Russia has shared copies of historical documents from Russian Empire archives concerning the first partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the partition. The documents were handed over in the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 19 September, BelTA has learned.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Russia Dmitry Krutoi, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov, State Secretary of the Union State of Belarus and Russia Dmitry Mezentsev, heads of diplomatic missions and diplomats of a number of embassies took part in the ceremony.

The documents included a Russian-Prussian convention and a Russian-Austrian convention on the first partition of Poland, the Warsaw emergency peace treaty on the annexation of some Polish lands to Russia, notes written by Aleksandr Bezborodko, a member of the Foreign Affairs Office in charge of Polish affairs, and sent to Catherine the Great and bearing her own resolution.

Originals of the documents were put on display at a dedicated expo, which was opened at premises of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 19 September. It is the first time the documents have been taken out of the Russian Empire Foreign Policy Archive.
