Romania interested in Belarus’ stronger ties with EU

MINSK, 14 June (BelTA) – Romania is interested in the strengthening of relations between Belarus and the EU, State Secretary of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Danut Sebastian Neculaescu said at the meeting with Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Boleslav Pirshtuk on 14 June, BelTA has learned.

Next year Romania will be presiding in the EU. “We would like to put a new brick in the foundation of relations between the European Union and Belarus,” the state secretary of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Danut Sebastian Neculaescu added that Romania, while presiding in the EU, would pay bigger attention to cooperation with the eastern partners. Digital economy will also make part of Romania’s EU presidency agenda. In his words, Belarus has been actively developing this area.

During the meeting the parties noted that the bilateral relations were gaining momentum and expressed interest in consolidating them. Boleslav Pirshtuk believes that the current level of trade in $150 million is a modest indicator for the potential of the two countries. “We could set an ambitious task to double it,” the vice speaker said. According to him, in some 2-3 years the countries could achieve the goal, provided ambassadors and investors take a more active part. MPs can also play an important role in boosting trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.
