Residents encouraged to help keep Belarusian cities clean

Residents encouraged to help keep Belarusian cities clean

BARANOVICHI, 22 March (BelTA) – Order in cities and towns should not be maintained by public utility enterprises alone. People should contribute, too. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the statement as he met with senior administration officials of the city of Baranovichi and Baranovichi District on 22 March, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Lukashenko remarked that Baranovichi had been cleaned up prior to his arrival. One of the residents even said it would be a good idea for the head of state to visit the city more frequently in order to keep the city in proper order.

Alexander Lukashenko said: “The city has been set in order, some things have been painted and repaired. It is only natural. Due to peculiarities of my character I cannot abide when someone comes to visit and the house is not clean. It is a no-brainer. This is why those, who are unhappy and are critical, shouldn’t be. They should help clean up when guests come knocking. Those, who want me to come here at least once a year to keep the city in order, are misguided. After my visit you will be the ones to keep the city clean the way I see it now.”

“The city looks fine but I am very much afraid you spend too much on it. You shouldn’t spend money on it. People themselves should clean it up. No, people cannot repair streets and fix potholes. We, the state, should be responsible for it. We have nothing to reproach people for. If we get things organized, our people respond favorably. Belarusians are clean-living people after all. They take pride in their clean cities and villages but we should organize things and ask for their assistance,” Alexander Lukashenko said.
