Regional security in spotlight as parliament speakers of Belarus, France meet in Paris

MINSK, 12 November (BelTA) - Chairman of the Council of the Republic Mikhail Myasnikovich met with President of the French Senate Gerard Larcher during a working visit to France on 11 November. The parties discussed a wide range of issues, including regional security, BelTA learned from the press service of the upper house of the Belarusian Parliament.

The parties also discussed ways of deepening bilateral contacts and the areas of cooperation with international organizations, including the Council of Europe, the European Commission. “As an essential priority of cooperation between the upper houses of parliaments the speakers highlighted the promotion of economic ties and attracting French investment in economic projects in Belarus,” the press service said.

Mikhail Myasnikovich and Gerard Larcher welcomed the establishment of friendship groups in the parliaments of the two countries. This happened in 2018, for the first time in the history of bilateral relations.

The Belarusian speaker left a note in the book of dignitaries of the French Senate. A return visit of the president of the French Senate to Belarus is in the works, according to the press service.

On 11 November Mikhail Myasnikovich took part in a  ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe war monument to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1918 Armistice and official receptions on behalf of President Emmanuel Macron of France for foreign delegations. On this day the French capital hosted the heads of state, government and parliament, representatives of some 80 countries and also the heads of major international organizations. Mikhail Myasnikovich briefly talked with the presidents of France, Ukraine, Lithuania, Georgia, Serbia, Moldova, the Armenian prime minister, heads of parliaments of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, and also the minister for foreign affairs of Poland.

According to the press service of the Council of the Republic, the events held to mark 100 years since the end of World War One emphasized the losses the countries suffered in one of the worst war conflicts of the 20th century and also the importance of uniting efforts for sustainable global security. During WWI the Western Front, the main “shield” of the region, went through the territory of the present Belarus. The Belarusian nation lost thousands of lives in the war.
