Proposal to remove provision about Belarus’ neutrality status from Constitution

MINSK, 11 August (BelTA) – It has been proposed to remove the provision about Belarus’ aspiration for neutrality from the Constitution, Chairman of the Constitutional Commission, Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Belarus Piotr Miklashevich told reporters on 11 August, BelTA has learned.

“The effective Constitution has this provision. In order to stay current with the times, we need to update this constitutional provision, since the Republic of Belarus is a member of the CSTO and is actually part of the military and political bloc,” Piotr Miklashevich said.

The head of the Constitutional Court emphasized: “At the same time, it was proposed to include a provision that no threats to other states will come from the territory of the Republic of Belarus and that our country will use collective defense to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, in accordance with international treaties.”

A regular meeting of the Constitutional Commission is taking place on 11 August. It is examining the remarks to the constitutional amendments proposed by the Constitutional Commission. The remarks were put forward by members of the Constitutional Commission.
