Progress in strengthening Belarus’ independence seen as result of integrated efforts

MINSK, 19 May (BelTA) – The progress we have achieved in strengthening Belarus’ independence and sovereignty is a result of the integrated efforts of all the government agencies, enterprises, academia, and the expert community, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said at the opening of the international conference 25 Years of Belarus’ Foreign Policy on 19 May, BelTA has learned.

The minister believes that workers of culture and athletes are full-fledged “ambassadors” of Belarus. People’s diplomacy makes its contribution to the development of ties with other countries. Besides, there is an inextricable connection between politics and foreign economic activity.

“Only integrated efforts bring tangible, concrete benefits and help achieve practical results in the dialogue with our partners,” Vladimir Makei said. In the modern context, the connection between domestic and foreign policy plays an important role. The diplomat emphasized that the implementation of foreign policy is the primary task of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other government bodies. The minister noted that the country’s national interests should be at the heart of all actions.

Vladimir Makei stressed that the conference should discuss not only the country’s accomplishments and achievements, but also what has not been done so far. The past 25 years was a crucial period for the country and for Belarusians. “Belarus has withstood the hardest challenges of the initial post-Soviet period. In its difficult and controversial search for identity, the country has preserved the best of the Soviet legacy and tried to learn from the best international practices,” Vladimir Makei said.
